PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Banfi was founded by John and Harry Mariani, the Italian-American brothers, in 1978.
Banfi Estate in Montalcino extends along the southern slopes of the township of Montalcino, which located at at the junction of the Orcia River and Ombrone Rivers, covering 7,100 acres of land. 1/3 is under specialized vines and the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub.
Climate: High exposure to sun and breezes, with rainfall concentrated mainly in Autumn. A significant diurnal temperate between day and night allow the grapes to fully ripen in a more balanced way, warmer day time: foster sugar development; cooler night time: help the vines to recover from the heat of the day; and therefore, to preserve aromas freshness and retain balancing acidity.
Soil: Various types of soils from sandy clay sediments with abundant pebbles and well-draining to calcareous clay soils that tend to retain humidity.
Highlight - Discovery of a fossilized whale in 2007! It proves the soils surrounding Banfi are rich in marine fossils which more than 5 million years ago!
Indicative Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah, selected as the best in the history of Banfi vineyards in Montalcino.
Tasting Notes:
Colour - Medium (+) Ruby.
Nose - High intensity with aromas of blackberries and plums. Can also smell licorice, olives, pepper and tabacco.
Palate - Dry and full-bodied. High acidity as a strong back bone of the wine, which soften tannin (you can try to feel the tannin on your teeth and gum) and make the body lighter than expected. Consistent with what is on the nose in layers.
Alcohol - 14.5%
Food Pairing: Perfected with grilled meat, ham and cheese. Suggested serving temperature between 16-18°C.
