In May, it is time to celebrate the Sauvignon Blanc Day (6 May), Pinot Gris Day (17 May) and Chardonnay Day (26 May) by tasting and sharing with you the white wines made from these grapes. However, have you ever noticed that there are beer 🍺, red wine 🍷, champagne (i.e. a bottle of fizz 🍾 and two clicking Champagne flute 🥂), sake 🍶 emoji on the mobile devices, but nothing for white wine? 🤔
In 2018, a winery “Kendall Jackson” based in Sonoma, California sent a 19-page proposal for White Wine Emoji to the Unicode Consortium. Unfortunately, the proposal was not approved, but it is not the end of the White Wine Emoji! The Unicode Consortium responded to the last proposal that it would “continue to consider emoji for future addition” which becomes a light of hope for New Zealand.
New Zealand Winegrowers runs a series of activities in May this year drawing people’s attentions and calling on people over the World to sign a petition. Charlotte Read, General Manager of New Zealand Winegrowers, said “New Zealand white wine makes up 93% of our global exports, and while Sauvignon Blanc represents 85% of our exports, New Zealand also produces other world-class white wine varieties such as Pinot Gris and Chardonnay,”.
“We hope that by requesting the white wine emoji from the Unicode Consortium it will shine a spotlight on the breadth of high-quality white wine that New Zealand produces, as well securing the emoji that has long been missing from the keyboards of digital devices since their creation in the late 1990’s.”
As we are a group of white wines lovers, we hope the Unicode Consortium can add an emoji for white wine. If you are not, everyone can get some more choices, why NOT?
